On June 24th, the Phase II of NFC's EPC project, Kazakhstan aluminum smelter, was formally put into production. President of Kazakhstan, Mr. Nursultan Nazarbayev attended the inauguration ceremony and gave speech to an audience of over 10,000 people.
"You have created a miracle in such a short time" and "the completion of this aluminium smelter is our country's magnificent achievement", Mr. President highly appraised all participants of the project. He mentioned that the average construction period of similar smelters in Soviet-Union time was 10-20 years, while the constructors of Kazakhstan aluminium smelter successfully finished the Phase I and Phase II projects in less than 5 years by dedicated efforts.
Mr. President said the construction of this aluminium smelter has fulfilled the country's dream of aluminium production independence. He has paid great attention to the progress of the project from very beginning. He attended both the founding ceremony in May 2005 and the inauguration ceremony of Phase I project in December 2007.
After the ceremony, Mr. President met NFC delegation, expressing the will of further cooperation between NFC and Kazakhstan's enterprises.
The Kazakhstan smelter project is invested by ENRC with a total investment around 850 million USD. The project includes two Phases, each of which has a design capacity of 125kt/a. It is the only aluminum smelter in Kazakhstan at present, and is the biggest local non-petroleum project in recent years. As the general contractor, NFC provided the most advanced Chinese aluminium smelting core technology and various high-quality Chinese equipment. Now this 250kt/a smelter has passed the check and acceptance procedure of Kazakhstan national acceptance committee. Many production and environmental protection parameters satisfy its top standards. The product of the smelter, aluminium ingot, has been registered and begun to be sold in LME.
